INTRODUCTION

If it were possible to go back in time and wander along the streets of Markethill in previous centuries there would be little difference from the town as it appears today. Of course, shops would have been different in their appearance and the livestock mart would have been conducted in the open air but, as regards the essence of trading and commerce in the town, little has changed.

The name Markethill literally means the 'Market on the Hill'. The town's market was established in 1791 and it has endured to the present day. In the days before cheap and efficient travel, Markethill was the town within easy walking distance for people of the area. It was of great benefit to the local farmers who previously had travelled to Armagh or Tandragee to sell their produce.
