An estimated 1.2 million peopl e fled Ireland in the aftermath of the Great Famine of the nineteenth century. Almost forty per cent of them were from Ulster. Men and women took berth on the infamous 'coffin ships'. In doing so, many never reached the New World but died of disease on the journey.
