THE GREEN LADY OF GOSFORD

As with many other silent and brooding buildings of its generation, Gosford Castle has its legends. Yet while other castles are haunted by ghosts of murderers and fiends, Gosford castle is frequented by a spirit known locally as the Green Lady of Gosford.

Her story is in fact that mixture of romance and tragedy that Hollywood thrives upon. The young lady's name is not recalled but, while working for the Acheson family, she met and fell in love with one of the aristocratic sons by whom she had a child.

When the Acheson family discovered her situation, they attempted to prevent a scandal by turning the girl and the babe from the castle. In the cold night air, both perished from exposure.

On evenings when the moon is full and the night silent, the Green Lady may still be seen moving freely around the gardens and castle seeking shelter and her lost love.

In the accompanying recording, Joey McStay talks about the "Green Lady" ghost of Gosford.
