MEMORIES (SCHOOLS)Pupils of Mountnorris Primary School (1999) report:
"Grandad Hughes' School. Grandad's school was called Mullaghduff School and it looked like a small old cottage. It was also very cold and damp. To keep it warm there was a fire and the coal was kept outside. School started at half past nine in the morning. The boys and girls all did the same work. Grandad did spelling, tables, sums, writing, and read stories. When work was good in school the teacher wrote very good on your page. When it was bad she put a big X. When you were naughty the teacher took you to the front of the class and gave you the cane. There were no school dinners and Grandad took bread and jam for his lunch. "There was a playground but it was only grass. I'm glad I go to Mountnorris School." (Laura Finch, P3) "Mummy got to school in a car but she walked to school on dry days. Her school had only two rooms, no PE or Assembly Hall and the toilets were outside. The children learnt songs by listening to the radio. Another school made the dinners and Mrs McGoughey served the dinners and washed all the dishes. Friday was the best day because it was the story day and the sweetie day. On cold days the teacher lit the fire and thawed the milk. Mummy said it tasted horrible." (David McLeod, P3)
